Effectively, you can use the same tripcode on any imageboard that implements them the same, but with enough computing power, someone else could figure out the key. Now, for secure tripcodes, each imageboard installation has a secret salt. There are various ways to do this, it could be md5(salt + md5(key)) for example. This effectively means that a secure tripcode key will produce different results on different imageboards, but are almost impossible to crack.
