I purchased this mic after hearing someone use it online as it sounded comparable to the Yeti. I cannot understand why the audio that I get out of this mic sounds so terrible. I am approximately two inches away from the mic, within the cardioid shape, and yet I sound quiet and probably worse than something that could come from my phone.
I can raise my voice into the microphone and it's still not good enough. I've owned this mic for several months now but still cannot figure out how to get the right sound out of it. If I turn up the sensitivity too high, then my audio starts to have cracks in it.
Plus there's a TON of white noise. I guess it's just a bad mic?
What do you guys think? So many variables. Is your recording area sound treated? Do you use any compression?
Is it uncleanable in audio editor? Do you have proper gain-staging? While its convenient to just say its a bad mic it could be potentially a mix of several small factors or one big issue. I havent used this microphone personally but I have used the Yeti. Truth be told, the Yeti didnt have THAT great of a sound profile.
(What the yeti has is an incredibly good marketing team). Do you have a clip of what it sounds like vs a clip of what you think it SHOULD sound like? My recording area is not sound treated. I don't think I use compression? I haven't messed with any settings like that. It's fairly cleanable in the audio editor but if I want to raise the volume of the clip then all the noise comes back. I don't know how to set the gain-staging besides for messing with the sensitivity in Windows (if that even answers the question).

I don't have a raw clip right now, but here's what it sounds like after I edit it to remove the noise and add normalization: Here's what I think I should sound like (but with slightly less striking bass): I understand the Yeti isn't that great, but it's at the point where the audio would be acceptable to me. In fact, I think I will be jumping directly to an XLR mic setup instead of using a USB mic (just not right now, so I want to use the mic I currently own). Audio quality is very important to me in my videos. No problem man.
First of all, you need a pop filter. Lot's of air and 'p' pops going on. Normally I'd say that you're too close to that particular mic but it sounds like you do a good overall job of keeping your volume in check so you'll probably avoid clipping. Adding a pop filter will make place you back another inch or so anyway, which is a good thing.
Always better to record at a low volume and turn it up later. Sound quality wise you sound fine. I'm not sure what you're unhappy with but as a fellow Samson C01U user i'm going to guess that you'd like some of the lower range to come through more. The C01U does tend to record flat, you could try messing aroudn by boosting some low end (or whatever you're looking for)with an EQ in post.
Just don't over do it. But honestly, it sounds fine. I remember being unhappy the first time I heard a recording of my voice on this mic. It didn't sound like I wanted it to either.
Looking back, I just wasn't used to a microphone being able to record what my true to life voice sounded like. It was a bit of a surprise. You sound fine man. I think you're worried over nothing. I actually use one in this video I just uploaded: You're right about my audio sounding fine. I think I was just upset because to me, the mic doesn't pick up my voice clearly enough. Like you said, it's very flat. But to me it seems like it doesn't do bass tones well, if at all. Furthermore, I always thought it was too quiet.
But I found a way to fix that in post. I am definitely missing that subtle bass that I like to hear from other content creators' mics. After talking it over with you guys from this subreddit, I realized the audio isn't as bad as I thought, so thank you! I own the mic and had the sensitivity cranked up for a while. I know that white noise that you're talking about, as it was permanently in the background of my audio. I had to do two things to fix it. First, I had to download a program called samson sound deck, located here - That has a built in Noise reduction feature for the co1u.
When I downloaded it, the option wasn't showing up for me, though. I had to also switch which usb port my mic was plugged into. Once I did that, the noise reduction option was available, which fixed all my issues. Now I can turn the sensitivity up as high as I want.
I use the Samson C01U and have been for about two years. I've heard the downloadable driver off their website is a turd. I just plugged it in and let Windows install a default driver for it. Then I go into Windows sound and set the recording volume slider for the microphone to usually about 43.
Also, if you go into the Recording Devices - Samson - Properties - Advanced Tab, you'll see a dropdown menu with some options. You want to make sure it is set to 1-Channel, 16-Bit, 48,000 kHz. I use 1-channel because whenever I try to use 2-channel, one channel is just blank. Not sure why. Sometimes Windows will default it to 44,000 kHz and the staticy sound is a result of Windows attempting to rebuffer the audio from 48,000 to 44,000. As for the white noise.

It's just part of it friend. This particular microphone is wired in such a way that it's constantly picking up a slight electronic hiss from the USB phantom power. Although I've been able to get a really nice sound out of it, it still takes some work. I use the DeNoiser effect in Premiere to get that out. Audacity and Audition both have a noise removal tool that would accomplish the same thing. Unfortunately, you'll have to use this on pretty much every recording - or use the Noise Gate feature in OBS if live streaming:(.
I've had a DeNoiser preset in Premiere that I always have to remember to apply to the commentary track whenever editing. It's not a terrible microphone for the price if you're willing to do a little extra work to remove the noise and adjust your audio settings in Windows (which should only have to be done once), but I've actually gotten kinda sick of it myself. Was able to snag a Shure PG42-USB off eBay on a really good deal so I'm going to try that out. EDIT: Samson also released a little software program that can run in the background and remove some of the white noise on the fly. The Samson Sound Deck can be purchased for like $3.99.
